United Engine Races to Certify PD-8 Engine for Yakovlev SJ-100 Aircraft by Year-End

United Engine, a key part of Russia’s Rostec, is on track to complete the certification of its PD-8 engine by the end of 2025. Developed for the Yakovlev SJ-100 aircraft, the PD-8 engine entered its flight-testing phase in mid-March, utilizing a modified Superjet 100 airframe, as reported by FlightGlobal.

During a recent announcement, United Engine’s Director General, Alexander Grachev, provided updates on the certification process, emphasizing the company’s strides in implementing domestic software for the design and production of engine components. He also highlighted that various subsidiaries of United Engine are now using “digital twins” technology to enhance engine development.

Grachev stressed that advancing domestic technologies and creating design and engineering software were crucial steps toward achieving full technological independence in the Russian engine-building industry. In addition to the PD-8, United Engine has already developed other notable engines, including the PD-14 for the Yakovlev MC-21 and the Klimov TV-117ST-01 for the Ilyushin Il-114-300 aircraft.

The company is also in the “active phase” of serial deliveries for the PD-14 engine, which powers the Russian MC-21 aircraft. According to Grachev, certification for the Il-114-300 aircraft is scheduled for 2025, with the first six or seven units of the TV7-117ST-01 engine expected to be delivered this year. Grachev confirmed that over 100 flights have already been conducted as part of the Il-114’s certification process, which is progressing well.

This year, United Engine aims to secure the certification for the Il-114 aircraft fitted with the TV7-117ST-01 engine, paving the way for the delivery of 6-7 engines.

Looking ahead, the Russian government’s Comprehensive Development Programme for civil aviation, extending through 2030, outlines ambitious plans, including the delivery of 990 aircraft. This includes a range of aircraft, such as the 142 SSJ New aircraft, 270 MC-21-310s, and 51 Il-114-300s, alongside other models like the Tu-214 and Il-96-300.
