Japanese energy giant Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. has entered into a strategic partnership with hydrogen engine start-up i Labo Inc. to accelerate the development of next-generation hydrogen combustion technology and customized lubricants tailored specifically for hydrogen engines.
As part of the collaboration, Idemitsu has invested in i Labo to support the start-up’s capital increase aimed at constructing its new research hub, the Aichi Hekinan R&D Center, slated to open in early autumn 2025. The partnership will focus on evaluating the compatibility of Idemitsu’s engine oils with hydrogen-powered systems and exploring the development of specialized lubricants optimized for hydrogen combustion.
Hydrogen engines, which utilize hydrogen instead of traditional fossil fuels like gasoline or diesel, operate using the internal combustion process. They emit only water vapor during combustion, making them a promising low-emission alternative for future mobility solutions.
Leveraging its proprietary “hydrogen conversion” technology, i Labo is working to adapt existing diesel engines into hydrogen-fueled models, targeting applications in trains, heavy trucks, and power generators.
Through the partnership, Idemitsu will provide engine oils for testing on both bench-scale systems and operational prototypes developed by i Labo. The goal is to validate performance and durability under hydrogen combustion conditions. Pending successful trials, both companies plan to co-develop dedicated engine oils specifically designed to meet the unique demands of hydrogen engines.
With a history of lubricant innovation dating back to 1911, Idemitsu brings over a century of technical expertise to the partnership. The company reaffirmed its commitment to using its technological strengths to reduce environmental impact in the mobility sector through cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
