Golden Triangle Storage Seeks FERC Approval for Spindletop Expansion Project

by Annie

Golden Triangle Storage LLC (GTS) has submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) seeking approval for its Spindletop Expansion Project. The proposal involves expanding GTS’s existing natural gas storage facilities located on a 90-acre site near Beaumont, Texas. This expansion is in addition to GTS’s ongoing GTS Expansion Project, which includes the development of two new salt dome natural gas storage caverns (Cavern 3 and Cavern 4), along with a new brine disposal well, a 33,000 horsepower (24,618 kW) engine-driven compression system, and additional supporting infrastructure.

The Spindletop Expansion Project aims to add approximately 30.75 billion cubic feet (bcf) of new natural gas storage capacity, with the creation of four new underground storage caverns (Caverns 9, 10, 11, and 12). These new caverns will increase both the storage capacity and the volume of natural gas that can be withdrawn or injected into storage, helping to meet the rising demand for natural gas storage and related services.

To support the expansion, the project will also introduce 10 new 5,500-horsepower (4,103 kW) Caterpillar G3616/Ariel compressors, along with associated equipment. Additionally, new gas dehydration, process measurement, and gas heating systems will be constructed adjacent to the new compressor building to support the facility’s enhanced operations.
