Oklahoma Introduces Automated Lawn Mowers to Cut Costs and Boost Sustainability

by Annie

The Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES), in collaboration with Gov. Kevin Stitt and the Oklahoma Division of Government Efficiency (DOGE-OK), has launched a new initiative to maintain the State Capitol grounds using automated lawn mowers. This innovative move is designed to reduce costs and support the state’s commitment to sustainability and fiscal responsibility.

OMES has purchased seven automated mowers for $24,000 to maintain about one acre of land around the Capitol. These “Auto Mows” replace the previous practice of contracting landscaping services, which cost the state between $350,000 and $600,000 annually. By adopting this technology, Oklahoma is drastically reducing its maintenance expenses while ensuring the continued upkeep of the grounds.

“This is a smart, efficient use of taxpayer dollars,” Gov. Stitt commented. “We are always looking for ways to reduce spending while maintaining top-tier services. By embracing automation, we’re saving hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and setting an example for how government can operate more efficiently.”

In addition to cost savings, the automated mowers offer multiple advantages. They naturally manage weeds without the need for herbicides or pesticides. Each mower also features GPS tracking and built-in alarms for enhanced security. For safety, the mowers automatically shut off their blades if they are lifted.

Bonnie Campo, director of OMES Outreach, stated, “We are committed to adopting technology that improves efficiency and delivers the best value for Oklahomans. These mowers align with our mission to make government operations smarter and more sustainable.”

Looking ahead, OMES plans to explore expanding the use of automated mowers to other state properties, further optimizing costs and environmental benefits across Oklahoma.
