Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Heavy Engineering division has successfully dispatched the fourth steam generator (SG) to India’s Kaiga Atomic Power Station, marking the completion of a full set of SGs for units 5 and 6 under construction at the plant. These units will feature indigenous 700 MWe pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs).
Located near the Kali River in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, Kaiga Generating Station, operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), has been operational since 2000. Its first four units are indigenous 220 MWe PHWRs, with Unit 4 starting operation in 2010.
The fourth SG was dispatched nine months ahead of the contractual schedule, and the entire set of four SGs was delivered in just 45 months. A ceremony marking the dispatch was held at L&T’s AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, attended by senior NPCIL officials.
Anil V Parab, Director & Senior Executive Vice President of L&T Heavy Engineering and L&T Valves, commended the nuclear team for setting industry standards with their “first-time-right” execution. He emphasized that this achievement aligns with the vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047,” aiming for 100 GWe of nuclear power generation.
With over six decades of partnership with NPCIL and the Department of Atomic Energy, L&T remains a committed contributor to India’s ambitious nuclear power program, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
