Yanmar is set to establish a dedicated Electrification Unit in April 2025, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable innovation in the compact off-highway machinery sector. The new division will focus on developing and integrating e-powertrain solutions, including batteries and eDrives, for industrial applications such as excavators and wheel loaders.
A Strategic Shift Toward Electrification
Operating as a component manufacturer, supplier, and integrator, the Electrification Unit will collaborate closely with Yanmar’s long-standing OEM partners to accelerate the transition to electric-powered machinery. The unit will focus on three core areas:
- Yanmar-branded industrial machinery
- Electrification solutions for OEMs
- E-powertrain components for industrial applications
“This initiative marks a major step in Yanmar’s mission to achieve a sustainable future,” said Tetsuya Yamamoto, COO of Yanmar Holdings. “Developing e-powertrains allows us to expand beyond diesel and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable society.”
Investing in Zero-Emission Technologies
Yanmar has been actively investing in zero-emission R&D, including its 2022 acquisition of Eleo Technologies, which bolstered its battery development capabilities. The Electrification Unit will operate autonomously, enabling agile decision-making and fostering innovation in electric machinery, battery systems, and alternative energy solutions.
This initiative aligns with Yanmar’s Green Challenge 2050, a long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions and explore hydrogen, non-carbon fuels, and resource recycling.
Industry Expert to Lead Electrification Efforts
To spearhead the new unit, Marko Dekena has been appointed as its leader. With extensive experience in electric and alternative energy powertrains within the automotive industry, Dekena brings technical expertise and strategic vision to Yanmar’s electrification drive.
“By leveraging Yanmar’s deep customer insights, we are committed to accelerating the shift toward zero-emission technologies,” said Dekena. “We will integrate existing initiatives, such as Eleo Technologies’ battery expertise, into this new division to strengthen Yanmar’s position in e-powertrain development.”
With this bold move, Yanmar is solidifying its role as a leader in sustainable industrial innovation, driving the future of electrification in the off-highway sector.
