JCB Gains Approval for Hydrogen Combustion Engine Across Europe

by Annie

Construction equipment manufacturer JCB has announced that 11 licensing authorities in Europe have granted approval for the sale of its hydrogen combustion engine, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable construction solutions.

JCB claims to be the first in the industry to develop a fully functional hydrogen-fueled combustion engine. This achievement follows over three years of research and development, supported by a team of 150 engineers and an investment of £100 million.

The Netherlands’ Vehicle Authority RDW was the first to issue official certification, with other European licensing bodies quickly following suit. These include authorities in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Additional certifications from other countries are expected throughout 2025.

To date, JCB has produced more than 130 evaluation engines, which are already powering backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, and generator sets. The company is currently in the advanced stages of real-world testing at customer sites, with reports indicating that the equipment is performing well.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford expressed pride in the achievement, stating: “JCB has proven that it can deliver a true zero-emissions solution for construction and agricultural machinery. This certification clears the way for hydrogen-powered engines to be sold across the UK and Europe. I am particularly pleased for our team of British engineers who have worked relentlessly to bring this project to fruition.”
