LandSpace Marks Milestone with 100th TQ Reusable Rocket Engine

by Annie

On Tuesday, Chinese private space company LandSpace celebrated a significant achievement as it rolled out its 100th reusable TQ series rocket engine, marking a major milestone in the development of China’s commercial space industry, according to China Media Group (CMG).

The engine, manufactured at LandSpace’s production base in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, highlights the scaling of China’s rocket engine production, ensuring a steady supply of core components for rockets in response to the growing demand driven by frequent space launches.

The TQ engine made its debut in a 10-kilometer vertical takeoff and landing test last September, which included China’s first in-flight ignition during the descent phase. These engines are set to power the ZQ-3 reusable rocket, which boasts a liftoff thrust of 900 metric tons. LandSpace is planning the maiden launch of this rocket later this year, and if successful, the ZQ-3 will become China’s first reusable carrier rocket.

The introduction of a reusable rocket is expected to reduce launch costs by up to 70%, marking a transformative development for the space industry. LandSpace achieved the impressive feat of reaching triple-digit engine production in just seven years, a testament to the rapid growth of China’s private space sector.

China’s private space industry benefits from the country’s extensive manufacturing capabilities. If domestic companies succeed in reaching the level of global space industry leaders, it would be a significant boost to China’s technological and industrial development, an insider told the Global Times.

The 2025 Government Work Report emphasized the importance of fostering the growth of commercial space and the low-altitude economy, marking the second mention of the commercial space sector in the report. This sector is seen as a key driver in advancing China’s next-generation productive forces.

Looking ahead, experts, including Rong Yi from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, predict that China will see multiple types of reusable rockets debut in 2025, marking an exciting new chapter for the nation’s space ambitions.
